Tesla Cybertruck recalled for the fifth time in a year, more than 27,000 units affected
Tesla is recalling over 27,000 Cybertrucks due to a delay in the rearview camera’s image activation, marking the fifth recall for the vehicle since its launch late last year. The recall stems from a software issue that prevents the rearview camera display from activating immediately when the vehicle is shifted into reverse. Affected trucks may experience a delay of up to 8 seconds before the camera image appears, exceeding the U.S. legal requirement of 2 seconds.
To address the problem, Tesla has issued a free software upgrade. Owner notification letters are expected to be sent by 25th November, 2024. Tesla customers who are affected by this recall can contact the company’s customer service at 1-877-798-3752 for further assistance or visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website.
This recall adds to a growing list of issues for Tesla’s highly anticipated Cybertruck, which began deliveries in November 2023, two years behind its original schedule. Earlier recalls involved problems with trim pieces that could detach, malfunctioning front windshield wipers, and a potentially sticking accelerator pedal.
Tesla has remained proactive in addressing these issues through software updates and other measures but the recalls highlight the challenges the company has faced in scaling production for the unique, angular electric truck. Tesla’s customer base has so far been enthusiastic about the futuristic design and performance of the Cybertruck, though these recurring recalls may test the patience of some buyers.
The latest recall was officially reported to the NHTSA, which mandates that rearview cameras in vehicles meet strict timing standards to enhance safety. While no major incidents have been reported due to the delay in the camera display, Tesla acted swiftly to issue the recall and release the necessary software fix.
Tesla’s Cybertruck, hailed for its bold design and cutting-edge features, continues to draw significant attention, both positive and critical, as it navigates the complexities of mass production and vehicle safety compliance.
