Flying cars have been a dream for many enthusiasts since long time. Such concepts have also been shown in many action movies but never met with commercial success. But that has not deterred companies to bring out such concepts from time to time at different international auto shows. One such company is the Terrafugia Inc. Based in Woburn, Massachusetts the company has showcased a roadable airplane at the ongoing New York Auto Show.
The roadable airplane, named Transition is described by Terrafugia as a two seater personal aircraft capable of driving on roads and highways and flying on unleaded automotive fuel. The Transition can cruise in the air a speed of 172 km/h with a maximum speed of 185 km/h. On the road, it can do a maximum speed of 105km/h only, but we think it’s more than sufficient, isn’t it? The Transition completed its first flight at the Pittsburgh International Airport in Plattsburgh, New York on 23rd March, 2012.
The Terrafugia Transition will retail at an anticipated base price of $279,000. The company has started accepting orders with a refundable deposit of $2500 with deliveries expected to commence at the end of this year. The Transition comes equipped with a “full vehicle parachute” which can land the entire aircraft. The company has also said that potential buyers can get the necessary Sport Pilot license in as little as 20 hours of flight time to be able to fly the Transition.

This is not the first time a company has tied to make a flying car. Earlier the Pal-V One (video below) was showcased too, which does a better job at flying than the Terrafugia Transition.
