Tata Tiago & Tigor electric vehicles have been displayed at the Auto Expo.
Over the years, Tata Motors has ensured that it brings a storm in whichever segment it puts its hands on! With more and more manufacturers working towards the Government’s ambition of electric mobility in the country by 2030, a lot of electric vehicles are being readied to woo the audience at the 2018 Auto Expo. Along with several promising products from the domestic manufacturer, Tata Tiago & Tigor Electric have been showcased at the event. Shod with a lot of blue accents, the two models are highly-anticipated by the audience as the brand is rumoured to make them available for private ownership very soon.
Entering the country in 2016, the Tiago took its own sweet time to establish itself as a potent machine for the price. Marketed as a “styleback”, the Tigor joined in March last year and added a sculpted boot section to the hatchback along with several visual differentiators. An electrified version of the Tiago was showcased at the 2017 Cenex LCV (Low Carbon Vehicle) Show which is developed by Tata Motors European Technical Centre located in the United Kingdom. The vehicle employs an electric motor that is good for 113 HP of power and around 200 Nm of torque.
The Tiago EV offers multiple drive modes and is claimed to be the quickest EV in India with the ability to sprint from 0 to 100 km/hr in less than 11 seconds. It comes with a rated top speed of 135 km/hr. In October 2017, Tata Motors bagged the contract to supply 10,000 EVs to the Government. It also came to light that the Tigor Electric, which is a compact-sedan version of the Tiago Electric, is the brand’s vehicle of choice. As per terms of the contract, the first batch of vehicles were dispatched in December last year from Tata Motors’ Sanand plant.
The Tigor EV gets an illuminated ‘EV’ badge on the grille and weighs 1156 kgs. As per an official ARAI document leaked earlier, the car gets a 3-phase electric motor which makes 40 BHP at 55 km/hr and 16 BHP at 45 km/hr. During bidding, Tata Motors had quoted an all-inclusive price of Rs. 11.2 lakhs for the Tigor EV to the Government including GST and 5-year warranty. At similar prices, the two models would be an interesting proposition to own if the company plans to launch the vehicles in the market for private buyers.
