After a series of roadblocks and hurdles, the Tata Tiago is finally here, and as expected, has aggressive pricing, starting at Rs. 3.20 lakhs.
Most of us know about the journey of the Tata Tiago. Its initial launch was as the Zica way back in December 2015, the initial appreciation by critics, then the infamous “Zika virus” confusion which led to the renaming of the car as the Tiago. But surpassing all of that, the car, which is a hatchback placed just below the Tata Bolt, has made it to launch and Tata expects it to sell in good numbers.
The Tata Tiago comes in both petrol and diesel variants. The 1.2 litre petrol engine is priced from Rs. 3.20 lakhs to Rs. 4.75 lakhs and produces 85 PS of power at 6000 RPM and 114 Nm at 3500 RPM. The diesel variant on the other hand is priced from Rs. 3.94 lakhs to Rs. 5.54 lakhs, producing 70 PS at 4000 RPM and 140 Nm of torque at 1800-3000 RPM. Tata Motors claim ARAI certified fuel efficiency of 23.84 km/l for the Revotron petrol motor and 27.28 km/l for the Revotorq diesel engine.
Where the ultimate test lies for Tata Motors is the competition it faces from Hyundai Grand i10, which is the highest selling car in the segment, as well as the Maruti Suzuki Celerio. Although it does seem like an uphill task for Tata to turn the tables around, the Tiago certainly has what it takes to give others a run for their money as you can find out in our video review as well as our in-depth review of the Tiago.
Tata is offering an optional safety pack for the XE, XM and XT trim of the Tiago at an additional cost of Rs. 18,000/-. Although this is a welcome move, it would have been great to see the Indian brand make the safety features standard across the range so as to not enable anyone to opt out of them. The good part is, dealers have been instructed to push the safety pack variants over others.
