Tata Sierra to be offered in petrol, diesel and electric powertrain options
Tata Motors has officially confirmed the much-anticipated launch of the Tata Sierra SUV in the second half of 2025. This announcement was made during the company’s latest investor presentation. The Sierra will be available in both electric and internal combustion engine variants.
EV First, ICE to Follow
Tata Motors has disclosed that the Sierra EV will hit the market first, with the ICE variant following shortly after. This strategy mirrors the launch approach used for the Tata Curvv, where the EV version debuted in August 2024, followed by the ICE variant in September.
Platforms
- ATLAS Platform: The ICE version of the Sierra is expected to be based on Tata’s newly developed ATLAS platform, which stands for Adaptive Tech Forward Lifestyle. Unveiled during the Curvv launch, this platform supports multiple body styles, including SUVs, MPVs, and sedans. Additionally, the ATLAS platform is designed to support 4X4 capabilities, potentially allowing Tata to introduce a 4X4 system in the Sierra ICE. If implemented, this would make the Sierra ICE the first 4X4 ICE-powered SUV from Tata Motors since the Safari Storme was discontinued in 2020.
- Gen2 Acti.EV Architecture: The Sierra EV will leverage Tata’s Acti.EV architecture, which underpins other models like the Punch EV and Curvv EV. This platform supports advanced EV features, and the Sierra EV may share components with the upcoming Harrier EV, scheduled for launch in early 2025. While not confirmed, the Sierra EV could include a dual-motor setup, providing all-wheel drive capabilities.
Versatility and Innovation
The Sierra’s return highlights Tata Motors’ focus on blending nostalgia with modern technology. The company has already patented the Sierra’s final design, ensuring a unique and contemporary look for this SUV. Tata’s investment in modular platforms like ATLAS and Acti.EV underscores its commitment to creating versatile, future-ready vehicles.
4X4 Options
Both the ICE and EV variants of the Sierra could feature all-wheel drive or 4X4 systems, catering to adventure enthusiasts and consumers seeking enhanced off-road capabilities. This would add a unique dimension to the Sierra lineup, especially if the 4X4 system is paired with the ICE variant, addressing a gap in Tata’s portfolio since the Safari Storme.
Tata Motors’ 2025 Roadmap
The Sierra’s launch comes as part of Tata Motors’ broader push to strengthen its SUV lineup. Prior to the Sierra, the Harrier EV is slated to debut in the first quarter of 2025, potentially sharing its platform and mechanical components with the Sierra EV.
