Tata Motors discontinues the Nexon EV 40.5kWh variant, streamlining the lineup

Tata Motors has streamlined the Nexon EV lineup by discontinuing the mid-range 40.5kWh battery option. This move leaves buyers with two battery pack choices: the 30kWh unit, known as the Medium Range (MR) and the newly introduced 45kWh Long Range (LR) variant.

Variant Lineup and Pricing

With the 40.5kWh version phased out, the Nexon EV now comes in 10 distinct variants, spread across eight trim levels. The MR version, powered by a 30kWh battery with an MIDC-certified range of 275 km, is available in Creative +, Fearless, Fearless +, Fearless +S and Empowered trims. Meanwhile, the LR version, equipped with the 45kWh battery delivering an MIDC range of 489 km, is offered in Creative, Fearless, Empowered, Empowered + and the top-end Red Dark edition.

The Red Dark edition, exclusive to the Empowered + trim, sits at the top of the Nexon EV range. With the 40.5kWh option removed, the Nexon EV’s price bracket remains consistent, ranging from Rs. 12.49 lakhs to Rs. 17.19 lakhs (ex-showroom).

Real-World Performance Insights

While the 40.5kWh battery variant claimed a MIDC range of 390 km, real-world tests painted a different picture. During independent evaluations, the model achieved an average range of 273 km on a full charge, aligning more closely with Tata Motors’ C75 test cycle estimate of 290-310 km. According to Tata, the C75 figure represents a more realistic driving range, with most users expected to achieve around 75% of the official MIDC figure under normal conditions.

Strategic Shift Towards Enhanced Range

The decision to discontinue the 40.5kWh variant appears to align with Tata Motors’ strategy of simplifying the lineup while offering a clearer distinction between the MR and LR variants. The 30kWh battery caters to urban commuters seeking affordability and practicality, while the 45kWh option targets buyers prioritising extended range and premium features.

With the refreshed lineup, Tata Motors aims to strengthen the Nexon EV’s position in the compact electric SUV segment, offering a balance of choice, performance and value for a broad spectrum of EV enthusiasts.
