Tata Nexon EV gets bigger battery with new variant, longer range & more features
Tata Motors has introduced a new 45kWh battery pack for the Nexon EV, enhancing its claimed range to 489 km, an increase of 24 km over the previous 40.5kWh variant. The updated Nexon EV is now available in three trims, starting at Rs. 13.99 lakhs (all prices, ex-showroom) for the base Creative trim, while the top-spec Empowered+ trim is priced at Rs. 16.99 lakhs. Additionally, Tata has unveiled a special Red Dark edition, priced at Rs. 17.19 lakhs.
New 45kWh Battery for Extended Range
The introduction of the 45kWh battery pack is a significant upgrade for the Nexon EV, making it available from the entry-level Creative trim at a price point Rs. 60,000 lower than the 40.5kWh variant, which starts from the Fearless trim. The larger battery provides an ARAI-certified range of 489 km, 24 km more than the 40.5kWh version. In real-world conditions, Tata Motors estimates the range to be between 350-370 km under the C75 cycle.
Despite the increase in capacity, Tata claims that the 45kWh battery maintains the same physical footprint as the 40.5kWh unit due to a 15 percent boost in energy density. This upgrade does not affect the power output, which remains at 145 HP and 215 Nm of torque. The charging time from 10-80 percent has also improved, with the 45kWh battery taking 48 minutes, compared to 56 minutes for the smaller unit.
Tata Motors is confident that the 5-star BNCAP crash test certification, previously awarded to the 40.5kWh variant, will extend to the 45kWh version as well.
Features and Variants
Along with the larger battery, the Nexon EV’s higher trims are equipped with several new features, including a panoramic sunroof, making it the second compact SUV in India to offer this feature, after the Mahindra XUV300. Additionally, a front trunk or ‘Frunk’ has been added for extra storage space.
Tata Motors will continue to offer the existing 30kWh and 40.5kWh variants alongside the new 45kWh version, giving customers a range of options.
Red Dark Edition
The Nexon EV Red Dark edition is available exclusively in the Empowered+ 45 trim, priced at Rs. 17.19 lakhs, which is Rs. 20,000 more than the regular Empowered+ 45 variant. This edition features gloss black exterior paint with red accents and 16-inch gloss black wheels. Inside, the Red Dark edition showcases red upholstery, an all-black dashboard with red contrast stitching and a Red Dark-themed user interface on the infotainment system. The seats also feature Dark embroidery on the headrests, adding to its premium appeal.
