Tata Nexon to get new 1.5-litre diesel engine with dual clutch automatic

Tata Motors appears to be gearing up to introduce a significant update to its Nexon lineup with the introduction of a Dual-Clutch Automatic (DCA) transmission mated to a diesel engine. This move is likely to make the Nexon Diesel one of the quickest-shifting vehicles in the sub-4-meter SUV segment, providing a competitive edge in a market where diesel options have been limited in recent years.

Diesel engines have been under pressure in India due to stringent BS6 emission norms, which have led many manufacturers to pivot towards cleaner alternatives like petrol, CNG and electric powertrains. Despite these challenges, diesel remains a popular choice among SUV buyers, particularly for its torque and fuel efficiency. Tata Motors seems to be capitalising on this preference by offering a more advanced transmission system with its diesel engines.

The upcoming Nexon Diesel DCA is expected to feature Tata’s new 1.5-litre Kryojet diesel engine paired with a 7-speed DCA gearbox. This is a notable departure from the current 6-speed Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) that has been standard in the Nexon Diesel variants. Dual-Clutch Automatics, known for their quick gear shifts and smoother driving experience, are relatively rare in diesel-powered cars in India, especially in the sub-4-meter SUV segment.

The introduction of a DCA transmission could position the Nexon Diesel as one of the sportiest and quickest-accelerating options in its category. This could appeal to buyers looking for a blend of performance and fuel efficiency, particularly those who have traditionally preferred diesel engines for their SUVs. The Nexon’s 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder diesel engine already offers a slight torque advantage over its competitors and this could be further amplified by the quick-shifting capabilities of the new DCA gearbox.

While the specific variants that will feature the 7-speed DCA are yet to be confirmed, it is likely that the top-spec Fearless+ S persona will be among them. There is also speculation that the DCA option could be extended to other trims such as Creative, Pure and Smart, although Tata Motors may choose to reserve this powertrain combination for its higher-end variants.

With this upgrade, the Nexon Diesel DCA is expected to carry a higher price tag, reflecting the more sophisticated technology it offers. Additionally, there are rumours that the upcoming Nexon update could also include a panoramic sunroof (spotted recently), a feature that has become increasingly popular in the compact SUV segment and would position the Nexon more favourably against competitors like the Mahindra XUV 3XO.
