The compact SUV from Tata Motors called the Nexon will be launched in FY2017. Production version of the same will be unveiled at the 2016 Auto Expo to be held in February.
The compact SUVs seem to be becoming too popular in India for all the right reasons. High ground clearance makes them apt for the roads and lower sticker prices make them more affordable than the full size SUVs. With plenty of brands already in the segment and others contemplating an entry soon, Tata Motors doesn’t want to be left out. It is developing a compact SUV based on the Nexon concept which it displayed at the 2014 Auto Expo. Underpinning the concept was the same X1 platform on which the Bolt and Zest are based on.
While the concept vehicle sported radical styling and was a total attention grabber, the production version of the Nexon will get toned down looks keeping costs in check. Part sharing with the Bolt and Zest is bound to happen which is not a bad thing considering they get Harman Kardon infotainment system, Bluetooth connectivity and multi-drive modes too. Where the SUV would differ is the mechanical side since it is likely to get a new 1.5-litre diesel engine which will produce around 110 BHP of power and will be paired to a new 6-speed gearbox.
Under the HORIZONEXT strategy, Tata Motors will be launching two new cars every fiscal year. With the Bolt and Zest launched in FY2015 and the Kite twins scheduled for a launch in FY2016, FY2017 will be the year for launch of the Nexon as well as the Hexa which is a full size SUV bearing resemblance with the Aria. All the new launches should help the brand gain lost traction and help it climb up in the sales charts once again. The Indian carmaker is also very happy with the response it is getting for the GenX Nano and is working on eliminating the supply constraints for the AMT gearbox.
