After Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors is keen on investing in AMT technology. Tata has already launched AMT in the Zest and the super-compact Nano gets it later this year.
Tata Motors is planning to invest huge in AMT (Automated Manual Transmission) technology. Tim Leverton (President and Head – Advanced and Product Engineering Division at Tata Motors) believes AMT technology is the future of cars, it is both cheaper as well as comfortable to drive from the customer point of view. The company has already showcased the Tata Nano AMT at the Auto Expo and expects 50 percent of its vehicles to have AMT technology by 2020. Tata Motors is working on various other technologies which could be safer and convenient. Maruti Celerio is the first car to have such technology in India.
Customers in India want new technology which is comfortable and easy to drive, this distinct automation might just change the trend. Tata has already introduced AMT in the Zest, while it plans to launch it in the Bolt later. The company has invested around Rs. 35,000 crores throughout the year in developing new technologies, factory planning, tooling and designing new vehicles. Tim said that they are looking forward to have AMT in multiple offerings in the entry-level, mid-level and premium markets in near future. After the huge success of buses with hybrid technology in Europe, Tata looks forward to launching them in India in the next 3 years.
Reducing weight of the vehicle and generation of new engines like Revotron gasoline are other regions Tata Motors is successfully working on. The company also takes support of its sibling Jaguar Land Rover in designing and improving fit and finish of its passenger vehicles. The Nano maker has tied up with Italian firm Magneti Marelli for the supply of AMT kits for its cars. The company recently launched the Bolt hatchback in the country.
