Tata latest SUV, the Harrier has been launched in India with a starting price of Rs. 12.69 lakhs.
Tata’s hotly anticipated new car, the Harrier has been launched with a starting price of Rs. 12.69 lakhs. The Harrier gets only a diesel engine option and is available in four variants. Based on Land Rover’s Omega Arc platform, the Harrier has been positioned between the Safari and the Hexa in their lineup.
The Harrier was first shown as the H5X concept at the Delhi Auto Expo in 2018. The concept’s aggressive styling and Tata’s commitment to bring a lot of it to the production version made the concept an instant hit. True to their promise, the Harrier retains the futuristic design of the H5X concept. The SUV is also bigger than the Hyundai Creta and Jeep Compass.
The interiors of the Harrier are upmarket and come with black and brown theme. There are a lot of high-quality bits on offer here like the knurled finished knobs to control the volume. The oak-brown faux wood looks premium and the quality of plastics is amongst the best we have seen on a Tata product. The top-spec variant also gets an 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system on the centre console which supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Other features on offer include 9 speakers JBL audio system, auto headlamps, auto wipers, keyless entry with push-button start/stop, rear AC vents, auto climate control, puddle lamps with logo projection, etc.
The Harrier is powered by a 2.0-litre Kryotec motor which is sourced from Fiat. The engine produces 140 BHP of power and 350 Nm of torque. The engine is mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox with a Hyundai sourced 6-speed automatic transmission expected later in the year. Due to less demand, Tata won’t be putting an all-wheel-drive system in the Harrier and all variants of the car will be front-wheel driven.
Tata is working on the 7-seater version of the Harrier which will get a more powerful version of the 2.0-litre diesel engine along with an automatic gearbox at the time of launch. Tata Motors recently revealed that they will launch the 7-seater version of the Harrier by the end of this year, possibly with a new name. The more powerful engine and an automatic gearbox will make their way into the standard 5-seater Harrier at around the same time.
The Harrier is available in 4 variants – XE, XM, XT and XZ. Even the base variant of the Harrier comes with projector headlamps, dual function daytime running lights which also function as turn indicators, electrically adjustable ORVMs, and rear parking sensors. On the safety front, all models come with ABS with EBD and dual airbags as standard. The top-spec XZ trim comes with all the goodies such as Xenon HID projector headlamps, cornering function for foglamps, logo projection in ORVMs, and shark fin antenna, an 8.8-inch touchscreen, a 7.0-inch TFT display in the instrument cluster. The XZ variant also features driving modes similar to that seen on the Land Rover SUVs. On the safety front this variant gets hill hold and descent assist, rollover mitigation, corner stability control, electronic stability programme, electronic traction control, six airbags (driver, co-driver, side and curtain) and ISOFIX child seat mounts for rear seats.
