Tata Harrier to finally get AWD but with the upcoming all-electric variant
Tata Motors appears to be taking a significant step forward in enhancing the off-road capabilities of its SUVs, starting with the upcoming Tata Harrier EV. A recently leaked design patent reveals that Tata is working on introducing terrain modes in its future SUVs, potentially offering an all-wheel-drive configuration.
Leaked Patent Details Terrain Modes
The leaked patent showcases a rotary knob with seven distinct terrain modes, hinting that Tata Motors is focusing on a more rugged driving experience. These modes are likely to include Snow, Sand, Gravel and perhaps a Custom setting tailored to specific off-road needs. The introduction of these terrain modes would position the Harrier EV as a more capable off-road vehicle, rivalling competitors in the SUV segment.
AWD and 4×4 Capabilities in Future Models
The Harrier EV will be one of the first Tata models to potentially offer AWD. The company’s new ATLAS (Adaptive Tech Forward Lifestyle Architecture) platform, which underpins the upcoming coupe-SUV Curvv, has been designed to accommodate 4×4 configurations with some modifications. This flexible platform could also serve as the basis for other future models, such as the next-generation Nexon and the upcoming Tata Sierra.
However, the inclusion of 4×4 or AWD in Tata’s compact SUVs, like the Nexon, remains uncertain. Given the limited demand for 4×4 in this segment, the company may reserve these features for larger models, like the Harrier EV, Safari EV and Sierra EV, where customers are more likely to appreciate and utilise such capabilities.
Terrain Modes vs Drive Modes
It’s important to note that terrain modes differ from the drive modes (Eco, City and Sport) already available in models like the Nexon, Curvv, Harrier and Safari. Additionally, the Harrier and Safari are equipped with traction modes such as Normal, Rough and Wet, which help optimise performance in specific driving conditions. The introduction of terrain modes, however, would elevate these vehicles’ off-road prowess, bringing them closer to what rivals like the Mahindra XUV700, Scorpio N and Jeep Compass offer with their AWD or 4×4 configurations.
What to Expect
As Tata Motors continues to expand its portfolio of electric and internal combustion engine SUVs, the introduction of terrain modes and AWD systems in future models signals the brand’s focus on meeting the evolving demands of the Indian SUV market. While the Harrier EV is set to lead this charge, it remains to be seen if Tata will extend these off-road capabilities to its ICE SUVs, potentially reshaping competition in the segment.
