Tata Avinya To Get Underpinned By JLR’s Electric Platform

Tata Avinya to be based on the Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA) platform

Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd (TPEM) and Jaguar Land Rover Plc (JLR), both subsidiaries of Tata Motors Limited (TML), have come together in a partnership aimed at accelerating the development of Tata Avinya, a pure electric vehicle that was showcased in its concept form at the 2023 Auto Expo.

Under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), JLR is licensing its Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA) platform to TPEM. This platform includes essential components like the electrical architecture, electric drive unit, battery pack and manufacturing knowledge.

This licensing agreement marks a big step in TPEM’s journey to create a series of ‘premium pure electric’ vehicles on the EMA platform. The heart of this collaboration is JLR’s EMA platform, which is set to underpin JLR’s next generation of ‘pure electric’ mid-sized SUVs for international markets, with a planned launch starting in 2025.

The EMA platform is optimised for Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV), aiming to maximise interior space and comfort while incorporating advanced electrical and electronic (E&E) architecture, connectivity, software capabilities and over-the-air features. The EMA platform also integrates a highly efficient propulsion system with cell-to-pack battery technology, battery management and a charging system designed to deliver optimum vehicle efficiency and range.

The Tata Avinya concept was first unveiled in 2022 and the Indian carmaker promises a vision of electric mobility, prioritising in-cabin experience, next-gen connectivity, Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), performance, refinement and safety. By partnering with JLR to leverage the EMA platform, Tata aims to make the Avinya series of premium pure electric vehicles globally competitive and future-proof.

The access to JLR’s EMA platform is poised to fast track Tata’s entry into the high-end EV segment while reducing development cycle time and costs. The advanced E&E architecture developed by JLR offers features that include the potential for Level 2+ autonomy, advanced connectivity, comfort and convenience features.

This collaboration will also speed up Tata’s adoption of Software Over the Air (SOTA), Features Over the Air (FOTA) and safety features like achieving a 5-star EuroNCAP rating, in addition to incorporating ultrafast charging technologies for high-performance vehicles.

The Tata Harrier and Safari have also benefitted from previous collaborations with JLR, as they were developed using JLR’s D8 platform.
