Tata Altroz To Get 3 Engine Options

Tata Altroz to get engine options derived from the Tiago and Nexon.

Altroz will rival the Elite i20 and Baleno after its launch

Last week, Tata Motors unveiled the Altroz hatchback at the Geneva Motor Show. The Altroz is the first of the new models to be built on Tata’s all-new ALFA platform. The hatchback will be placed in the premium segment, that will be positioned above the Tiago and will be in contention with Hyundai Elite i20 and Maruti Baleno.

Engine options expected to be offered for the Altroz is a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine from the Tiago, that produces 84 BHP and 112 Nm of torque, a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol from Tatas Nexon, that has been detuned to produce 102 BHP and 140 Nm of torque. A 1.5-litre diesel engine will also come from the Nexon expected to churn out 90 BHP.

Engineers at Tata are confident about the vehicle’s performance even with the detuned performance figures because of the nimble and lightweight structure of the car. The Altroz is 200 kg lighter than the Nexon, from which it derives its engine. When compared to the Elite i20 and Baleno, Altroz has an edge over them due to its favourable power-to-weight ratio.

The main reason to detune the engine in the Altroz was the torque limitation of the 5-speed TA-65 gearbox. Packaging constraints in the premium hatchback’s smaller engine bay meant that Tata Motors had no choice but to use the Tiago’s TA-65 unit, which has a lower power and torque rating instead of the Nexon’s heavy-duty 6-speed T6300 manual gearbox. The Altroz will be launched later in 2019 and is expected to be priced competitively in the market.
