Suzuki Unveils 7-Seater Wagon R MPV Concept

Suzuki has unveiled the Wagon R 3-Row Concept at the 2013 Indonesia International Motor Show. The MPV Concept is put together by adding a third row to the existing Wagon R. Suzuki is currently analysing the market response for the Wagon R Concept MPV. They are also conducting a survey to know how much customers think is the right value for this vehicle, so that they can price the MPV competitively. The Suzuki Wagon R MPV will continue to have the same wheelbase but the third row will be made to accommodate two adults by extending the rear end.

The Suzuki Wagon R MPV is unlikely to be powered by the same 3-cylinder, 67 PS, 90 Nm, 1.0-litre petrol engine that powers the hatchback sibling as performance would be sluggish. Suzuki might plonk in the 1.2-litre K-Series engine (84 PS, 115 Nm) which does duty in the Ritz, Swift and DZire. The production-spec Wagon R MPV will be positioned below the Ertiga making it a practical car for price conscious buyers. The direct competition for the Wagon R 3-Row Concept will be the recently unveiled Datsun GO+, the MPV variant of the GO hatchback. But given the fan following of Suzuki and the reliability its cars carry will make the customers choose the Wagon R MPV over the GO+.

The 7-seater Wagon R might come to our shores as well as the trend for MPVs are slowly picking up and Suzuki will have the advantage as there are very few models in the low-end MPV segment. This unveil has shown the way for the low-cost MPV market with competitors recently showcasing the Honda Mobilio and the Datsun GO+. The Wagon R MPV will be priced slightly above the Wagon R hatchback and expect the price to be between Rs. 5 – 7 lakhs.

The Wagon R MPV is low-cost, sub 4-metre in length and can seat 7 people. This was the same philosophy that Mahindra adopted when it launched the Quanto and it is selling in decent numbers. The Wagon R MPV is likely to be launched in India by late 2014 or early 2015 which will give our Indian customers more options to buy in this segment.
