Suzuki has launched the Swift hatchback with a 4×4 system in the UK. Some European countries and Japan already had the all-wheel drive Swift, which is doing good numbers for the carmaker. The updated Suzuki Swift 4×4 will be available as a five door model featuring a 1.2-litre petrol motor, mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. The manufacturer has increased the ground clearance of the Swift 4×4 by 25 mm. The all-wheel drive is available in two trims – SZ3 and SZ4.
The SZ3 trim of the Suzuki Swift 4×4 is equipped with basic convenience and safety features with 4×4 badging, which looks identical to the standard Swift model. The range-topping SZ4 trim gets a rugged appearance offering extra protection with the addition of front and rear skid plates, black wheel arch extensions and black side skirts. The SZ4 variant also gets power folding door mirrors with turn indicators and Daylight Running Lamps integrated neatly in the fog lamps housing.
The new all-wheel drive system on the Suzuki Swift 4×4 is fully automatic and is a permanent 4-wheel drive system, which transfers additional torque to the rear wheels via a viscous coupling. The Swift 4×4 is 65 kgs heavier than the 2WD standard model with the emissions being 10 g/km higher at 126 g/km. The Swift 4×4 SZ3 trim is priced at £11,516 (Rs 10.44 lakhs) and SZ4 at £13,116 (Rs. 11.89 lakhs). We don’t expect Maruti Suzuki to introduce the Swift 4×4 in India anytime soon but if they do, it will give a tough fight to the upcoming Volkswagen CrossPolo.
