A Malaysia spec Suzuki S-Cross was able to score an impressive 5 stars in the ASEAN NCAP crash tests, topping the UV segment by overtaking the Honda CR-V.

For those of you who have only heard of Euro NCAP, there is another automobile safety rating program called The New Car Assessment Program for Southeast Asian Countries or simply ASEAN NCAP. This program was jointly established by the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) and Global New Car Assessment Program (Global NCAP) in December 2011 in New Delhi. Currently, ASEAN NCAP tests vehicles through two separate assessments conducted in the rating scheme that includes Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) that is rated with stars and Child Occupant Protection (COP) which is a percentage-based rating.
The latest vehicle to be tested by ASEAN NCAP is the next major launch in India, the Suzuki S-Cross. The S-Cross managed to get a maximum score of 5 stars under the Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) category and the crossover scored 4 stars in the Child Occupant Protection (COP) category. According to the 2015 Q2’s published results, the S-Cross received an AOP score of 15.48 out of 16 and a COP compliance rate of 81%.
The S-Cross used in the test was a Malaysia model, that is assembled in Hungary and it sports a 1.6-litre petrol engine. As a result of this, the S-Cross has become the first vehicle to be tested by ASEAN NCAP that has been produced in Europe. As a prerequisite for cars that get a rating of 4 stars or more, the crossover was subjected to a UN R95 side impact test in which the vehicle scored a ‘Pass’ rating.
According to ASEAN NCAP, certain features like Isofix, electronic stability control (ESC) and top tether points that comes as standard helped the S-Cross to get the impressive safety score. The vehicle has taken the lead in the UV segment by beating the now second placed Honda CR-V which achieved an AOP score of 15.46 (5 stars) and a COP rating with 86% compliance (4 stars).
We all hope that the Indian version is also similar to the one that was used in the crash tests because the safety aspect of a vehicle is slowly becoming an important factor that car buyers in the particular segment (entry level or compact SUV) consider before buying.
