Suzuki recalls 125cc scooters in India due to a faulty high tension cord in ignition coil

Suzuki Motorcycle India has issued a significant recall affecting three of its popular 125cc scooters – the Access 125, Burgman Street 125 and the Avenis 125. A total of 3,88,411 scooters manufactured between 30th April, 2022 and 3rd December, 2022, are included in this precautionary recall.

The company has identified potential issues that could affect the performance and safety of these models. According to the official recall notice, the problem lies with the high tension cord installed in the ignition coil, which does not meet the required specifications. This defect can lead to several issues, including engine stalling, starting failure, and speed display errors.

Specifically, the recall notice states, “Since high tension cord which did not meet the drawing requirements (NG) was installed to the ignition coil, crack and breakage occurred in the high tension cord due to repeated bending caused by engine oscillation during running, resulting in engine stall and starting failure. Further, when cracked high tension cord is exposed to water, the vehicle speed sensor and throttle position sensor may be damaged by the leaked ignition output, resulting in speed display failure or starting failure.”

Owners of the affected scooters are being contacted to bring their vehicles to the nearest service centre for inspection and resolution of any issues. This recall aims to ensure the safety and reliability of the scooters for all users.

This announcement follows a recent recall of Suzuki’s adventure motorcycle, the V-Strom 800 DE. All 67 units sold to date were recalled due to a potential defect in the rear tyre.

In addition to addressing these recalls, Suzuki Motorcycle India has recently launched the 2024 models of the Access 125, Burgman Street 125, and Avenis 125. These new models feature updated colour options, though they remain unchanged in all other aspects.
