Renderings of the Suzuki GSX-150R have emerged and if the production bike looks anything like these renderings, than Yamaha has a lot of reasons to worry.
The 150cc segment is easily the most popular one in India and has so many sub-categories that it could spin you into confusion. If there is one 150cc motorcycle which we can call the best without a second thought, it’s Yamaha’s revolutionary R15 which took the market by storm when it was launched in 2008. Sporty offerings aside, it’s the Suzuki Gixxer SF FI which is the best of the 150cc bunch and now Suzuki plans to launch the GSX-150R.
Fresh renderings of the Suzuki GSX-150R show a sporty looking motorcycle which might remind you of Hyosung but don’t forget that the Korean firm was in collaboration with the Hayabusa maker in the 1980s and that’s why the GT250R and GT650R have Suzuki design inspiration.
The design also reminds one of Suzuki’s litre-class offerings and the rectangle headlamp, beefy tank and generous dimensions of the motorcycle might not make it to production, so these renderings do seem optimistic. But if Suzuki does give us a bike which looks like this, then Yamaha has a lot of reasons to worry as R15 sales could be affected.
Design aside, the current Gixxer twins are so capable that the sporty GSX-150R will be a hoot to ride and could become the new benchmark for handling in the segment. The 150cc engine powering the Suzuki GSX-150R will be a 4-valve, liquid-cooled unit, paired to a 6-speed gearbox. The motorcycle is being developed for the Indonesian market but an India launch can’t be ruled out.
