Suzuki plans a new motorcycle based on the Gixxer but with an engine capacity between 150cc and 250cc. The company wants to focus more on the premium slice of the Indian two-wheeler industry.
Japanese two-wheeler maker Suzuki, famous world over for its Hayabusa and Intruder motorcycles, made its Indian debut almost 10 years ago. The company tried to compete with the established players in the affordable commuter motorcycling segment and failed miserably. But the recent success of the Gixxer motorcycle and its fully faired sister Gixxer SF has sparked a new life into Suzuki, which has learnt from this experience and now wants to foray further into the premium motorcycling section of the Indian two-wheeler market.
Suzuki plans to introduce a new Gixxer based motorcycle in the Indian market to capitalize on the success of the nameplate. The new bike will have a bigger engine with its capacity lying between 150cc to 250cc. The company also announced its intentions to launch a new product every year in the country. In the April 2015 to February 2016 period, Suzuki sold nearly 76,766 units of the Gixxer twins in the domestic market and exported over 36,000 units, thereby helping the automaker turn profitable for the first time in a decade.
