Suzuki Copies Honda With Ciaz Rear Similar To City’s

Suzuki will launch the Alivio mid-size sedan in China (Maruti Ciaz in India) in the second half of this year. Showcased as a concept at the 2014 Auto Expo in February, the production model was spotted undisguised in China and the new spy shots reveal the toned down exteriors of the sedan compared to the concept. Measuring 4545 mm in length, 1730 mm in width and 1475 mm height, the Ciaz will be the longest sedan in its class when launched in the country.

From what we see in the new spy shots, the front fascia is true to the concept, but gets a toned down appearance. The grille gets horizontal chrome slats, while the bumper features an inverted trapezoidal shaped air duct. The double barrel headlamps are large and compliment the long and wide front hood of the car, no projectors though. The flamboyant fog lamps from the concept have also been replaced with conventional circular units. The side profile on the other hand has a soft appearance and looks compact, but features chrome door scuffs on the belt line.

The rear though will remind you of the all new Honda City with the influence being very prominent, especially with the tail light design. It might even confuse the layman at first glance. For all we know, the design might be the new ‘in-thing’ in Japan, or probably the same team provided inputs on both the models. Nonetheless, the rear looks premium and does hold a luxurious and sharp feel overall. Expect to a see a lot of chrome touches on the top end variants, and we suspect a sun roof to be an added feature available.

The interiors of the Indian spec Marui Ciaz were spotted few weeks ago and will share a lot of components with the Ertiga and DZire models. The cabin will feature beige and black interiors, while leather seats will be offered as standard on the top end variant. The sedan will also feature rear air-con vents, start-stop system, touchscreen infotainment system and many other features. The Chinese spec variant however, is expected to be a tad bit different and will get additional features inside the cabin.

In terms of powertrain though, the Alivio/Ciaz will come with a 1.6-litre petrol unit that will produce around 118 PS of power, mated to a 5-speed or a CVT automatic transmission. In India, the 1.3-litre DDiS diesel engine from the SX4 will also be on offer producing 90 PS of power, mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. Rumours also suggest that the 1.4-litre K-Series motor could also be offered as an option. The Ciaz will be competing against the new Honda City, along with the Hyundai Verna, Volkswagen Vento and the Skoda Rapid in the segment. Will the Ciaz be able to break the City’s successful run in the segment? Only time will tell.
