The Supreme Court BS4 order on vehicle registration post lockdown that was issued in March to help automobile dealers clear stocks has been recalled.
The Supreme Court (SC) court was not pleased with dealers who sold over 2.55 lakh BS4 vehicles while the allowed number was only 1.05 lakh vehicles.
Thus, recalling its earlier order on BS4 vehicle registration post lockdown, the court said that additional vehicles sold during the extension period will not be registered.
It directed the Federation of Automobile Dealers’ Association of India (FADA) to submit data of BS4 vehicles registered in the period in question. This will be checked with information available on the VAHAN portal.
FADA was also warned against taking advantage of the court by “playing fraud”. The next hearing of the case is on 23rd July.
On 27th March, the Supreme Court permitted sale of 10 percent unsold BS4 vehicles for only 10 days after the lockdown is lifted.
The vehicles should also be registered within 10 days of sale. But this was not allowed in the Delhi-NCR region.
The order came after FADA made an urgent appeal before the apex court stating unsold inventory with dealers accounted for Rs. 7000 crores.
It said that 15,000 passenger cars, 12,000 commercial vehicles, seven lakh 2-wheelers, all of them BS4, were at stake and urged resumption of BS4 vehicle registration post lockdown.
FADA has also stated before the court that as of 31st March 2020, its member dealers have sold 94,000 BS4 vehicles, while non-member dealers sold over 1.3 lakh BS4 vehicles.
