While Indians continue to wait for the EcoBoost engine, Ford has already launched the compact motor in the Focus for the UK market. Now the 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine is already making waves across the globe and has already been crowned the 2012 Engine of the year winner. The Ford 1.0-liter EcoBoost is a 3-cylinder motor which produces 125 PS of power and 170 Nm of peak torque (200 Nm on OverBoost). Now this amount of output from a 1.0-litre engine is equivalent to what a 1.6-litre motor would produce. However some people want more power.
To quench this thirst of more power and torque, British tuning firm Superchips has launched a remap for this compact turbo-charged motor, which boosts power and torque significantly. Superchips, through the use of a new software, has improved the performance of this 3-cylinder, direct injection, turbo-charged EcoBoost engine. The company found the power to be 127 BHP at the dyno, which is more than what Ford claims. The remap has resulted in power to increase to 145 HP at 6169 RPM and 227 Nm at 2656 RPM. The remap is priced at Rs. 40,000/- (£455).
Ford will launch the EcoSport with the 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine in early 2013. The 1-0-litre petrol engine might be de-tuned for Indian conditions but that is something we hope doesn’t happen. The company claims a mileage of 20 km/l, which is very good for a engine that powerful. Indian tuners will certainly come up with solutions to boost power of the EcoBoost engine. Expect solutions to be cheaper than the one offered by Superchips. However, the EcoSport will be more popular with the 1.5-litre TDCi diesel engine.
