Mahindra has been very vocal about its plans to launch vehicles from SsangYong range in India. The company recently launched its global SUV, the XUV500 in the country and now has its eyes set on launching vehicles from its Korean SUV maker. The Rexton is all set to make its debut soon and was spotted by MotorBeam reader Rohan Salgarkar on the Mumbai-Pune expressway. The car had no camouflage and sported Nashik number plates. Mahindra has always extensively tested its vehicles before launching it and the Rexton is no different. The car has been spotted multiple times in different guises (once with Scorpio tail lamps as well!).
The SsangYong Rexton is based on a the last generation Mercedes-Benz M-Class. It is a 7-seater SUV and has 4-wheel drive as standard. The Rexton is powered by a 2.7-liter turbocharged, diesel engine which produces 184 PS of power and 402 Nm of torque. This is the same engine which does duty on the Axe defense vehicle. However Mahindra might consider launching a low cost version of the Rexton, which could be powered by the 2.2-liter mHawk motor from the XUV500. The Rexton is expected to retail around the Rs. 18 lakh price point, giving competition to the Chevrolet Captiva and Toyota Fortuner.
