Giving a fresh update to their flagship saloon, Skoda launched the Superb facelift at the Auto Expo in Delhi today. The coveted saloon receives a new front and rear styling and more equipment added to its list. Skoda has also showcased the Yeti facelift at the Auto Expo.
The facelift brings the Superb up-to-date with Skoda’s new design language. The Mission L design features are quite evident on the exteriors that were first seen on the all new Skoda Octavia. The Superb’s front has been redesigned to being visibly different from the predecessor. The facelift includes a new lower and wider butterfly grille with Skoda’s new logo surrounded by chrome. The redesigned headlight cluster incorporates Bi-Xenon front light system with cornering function and C-shaped Day time running lights as well as side indicators made of LED’s. The fog lamps are also revamped to complete the look. The side profile on the other remains largely the same with subtle touches. Skoda has updated the Superb with 16-inch 10-spoke helix alloy wheels and have chrome induced windows for a premium touch.
On the other hand, the rear features a redesigned tail lamp cluster; the new part-LED tail lamps look very sharp indeed. You can sense inspiration from Audi for the design. The bumper, spoiler and boot-lid are now more angular and the number plate has been moved to the boot in line with the Rapid and Octavia sedans. The Skoda and Superb logos also receive the new typeface, which completes the redesign of the rear profile.
Much like the predecessor, the Superb boasts of an exceptional build quality on the inside. The fit, finish and quality of the materials is just from a class above with no room for complains. The new Superb has been updated with a push button start and receives a chiselled looking 3-spoke multi-functional steering wheel. The rear as usual offers plenty of head room and knee room and comes with rear air-con vents, which is a must have at this price point. In terms of tech, Skoda has updated the Superb with a 6.5-inch Bolero touchscreen audio unit with a CD changer and Bluetooth telephony.
The car being a facelift, there are no new additions to the powertrain and is available with the 1.8-litre TSI unit producing 158 BHP of power and 250 Nm of torque, whereas the 2.0-litre TDI unit produces 140 BHP of power and 320 Nm of torque. The engines are mated to a 6-speed manual and a 7-speed dual-clutch DSG automatic transmission. The 3.6-litre V6 petrol engine has now been discontinued though. The car is now offered in two trim levels namely Ambition and Elegance.
With the update in the design and spec sheet, the prices for the Superb have also been revised. The prices for the base petrol variant start at Rs. 19 lakhs and goes up to Rs. 25 lakhs (ex-showroom) for the top of the line diesel variant. The new Superb is surely here to stay until the next generation Superb lands in India in 2016. The closest competitor is the Volkswagen Passat, while the Hyundai Sonata and the Toyota Camry are only available with a petrol option, while the Superb is powered to kill the competition with its new fresh, sporty, youthful yet firm looks and of course a potent diesel mill.
