Skoda has recently filed a trademark for the title Slavia in India, indicating that the Rapid’s replacement might be called by that name.
While the ageing Rapid has been selling well, due to attractive pricing of lower rung models (of which the Rider has now been discontinued), the carmaker knows it can only stretch a car’s lifespan for so long.
While Skoda has its focus pinned on launching its compact SUV based on the Vision IN concept in India, it has not forgotten about its smallest sedan either.
To be underpinned by the MQB A0 IN modular platform that will also be used to produce the firm’s compact SUV, the next-generation C-segment sedan, likely to be named the Slavia, will be developed alongside the new Volkswagen Vento.
The current models of both sedans are known for their solid behaviour on the road and have sold in relatively decent numbers over the years.
Thus, the next-generation Skoda C-segment sedan is expected build on those traits while also offering more features, latest tech and fresh looks. Of course, Skoda is not expected to skimp on safety either.
Powering the car would likely be the current 1.0-litre TSI motor good for 110 PS and 175 Nm and it will be mated to a 6-speed manual, while an auto option will be offered too.
Since the carmaker is looking to increase localisation levels for new cars launched under its India 2.0 plan, expect the sedan, for which the Skoda Slavia trademark has most likely been filed, to be priced on a par with its rivals like the Honda City, Hyundai Verna, among others.
Launch of the Rapid’s successor will take place sometime during the second half of next year after Volkswagen introduces the next-generation Vento.
