Skoda plans to launch the Kylaq Cup racing series in India with 300 HP Kylaq

Skoda is planning to create a one-make series with the Kylaq which will race throughout India. The Czech company intends to create and develop the image of the enthusiastic nature of the crossover. Let’s take a closer look to understand how this series tries to transform the Indian Motorsport Landscape.

Skoda Kylaq Racecar Details

The Cup series intends to create a motorsport competition with reasonable costs so that drivers can train and get better at the art of racing. The Kylaq is currently powered by a 1.0-litre TSI engine that produces 115 HP and 178 Nm of torque, based on the MQB A0 Platform. The plans are to build the Kylaq Race Car using the MQB 37 Platform.

Engine & Performance Details

The MQB 37 Platform is powered by the 2.0-litre TSI engine and is used on the likes of Skoda Octavia, Superb, Kodiaq and Tiguan. The latest Skoda Octavia VRS produces a respectable 265 HP.

However, the Kylaq racecar will produce 300 HP and 450 Nm of torque. The Kylaq Racecar will also feature crucial elements such as Roll Cage, Upgraded Brakes with Race Tuned Suspension and Slicks.

Skoda has previously allowed rally-prepped Fabia R5 to be used by privateers and enter rallies. However, this is the brand’s first entry into one-make racing championships, joining the likes of Maruti Suzuki and its sister company Volkswagen. It helps to nurture young racing talent and advertise to potential customers.

Volkswagen has also been involved in creating opportunities for motorsport talent since 2010. In 2010, they inaugurated the Volkswagen Polo Cup. In 2015 they ran the Vento Cup and in 2017, the Ameo Cup. They returned with the Polo Cup in 2020 after a brief hiatus. However, Volkswagen Motorsport India handed over the operations to Rayo Racing in 2022, ending the full manufacturer support of the series.

Outlook

Skoda is also celebrating the 125 years of its illustrious motorsport prowess. This is also a strategic time to launch the Kylaq Cup Series as it is the 25th Anniversary of Skoda India! The Kylaq Cup is still in the planning phase with racetracks and dates still to come. However, it will be great to see the brand sponsor and support Indian motorsport talent internationally as well.
