Skoda Compact SUV India Launch Confirmed, Could Be Called Kosmiq

Skoda Vision X Concept

Details of the Kosmiq are not out yet, but it will be built on the same platform as the VW T-Cross SUV.

The Kosmiq is expected to be designed with cues from the Vision X Concept

As part of the Volkswagen Group’s 2.0 Turnabout Plan for India, Skoda will be launching a compact SUV in India by 2020. This will be the first vehicle to enter India after the German group decided to let Skoda take the charge of its operations in India.

The upcoming SUV, supposedly named Kosmiq, will be built on the MQB-A0 architecture, which will be a special platform for India. It will be derived from Volkswagen Group’s MQB global platform.

It is expected that the Kosmiq will share its platform with the Volkswagen T-Cross. The new platform is being developed to be able to incorporate the upcoming crash test standards which are scheduled to come into effect from 2020. This will also be the right time for the company to launch the Kosmiq as a fresh new product which meets the upgraded norms and regulations will be highly appreciated.

The Kosmiq is likely to be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show to be held in 2019. Speculated additional features besides the platform include the Virtual Cockpit feature which is a digital instrument cluster and reclining seats in the second row. The Kosmiq is likely to house a 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine.

The company mentioned how it was important to localise the platform and keep manufacturing and other costs in check. This will help future Skoda vehicles to be competitively priced. The Kosmiq will be thrust into a market segment which already sees tight competition between the Hyundai Creta, Renault Captur and upcoming models like the Nissan Kicks and Tata Harrier. While the design specification are still under the veil, the Kosmiq is expected to take the design from the Vision X Concept, which was unveiled earlier this year. The Kosmiq is likely to be debuted globally in 2019.
