When it comes to sedans, car buyers in India seem to give the most preference to Japanese models as can be seen in the various segments.
This ever growing segment of compact sedans is witnessing some ups and downs in sales. The Swift DZire’s sales were falling until last month and this month it seems that the vehicle’s sales are again rising up. The Honda Amaze was averaging 4000-odd units last month but this time sales have taken a hit and the car has sold sub-3000 numbers. The Hyundai Xcent overtakes its Japanese rival with a slight rise in numbers. Numbers of the Ford Figo Aspire and Tata Zest are consistent and neither of them have any drastic changes in sales trends.
We thought the C-segment battle had kind of died out now with sales trends being very similar every month with hardly any proper competition but hey, we are quite surprised with the numbers this time. As usual, the Honda City continues to rule the market with 6000-odd sales while the Maruti Ciaz, which was at second position until last month, has now fallen to third position with a drastic fall in sales from 5509 to 2841 units. The Toyota Etios overtook the Ciaz while sales of the Hyundai Verna have also taken a hit very drastically. Sales of the Volkswagen Vento are more or less the same but the Skoda Rapid seems to have fetched more homes this month.
Surprisingly, Nissan has been able to sell more units of the Sunny last month. It seems their heavy advertising campaign on television is working, apart from those humongous discounts. The other low-sellers like the Fiat Linea, Chevrolet Sail and Renault Scala have also witnessed a marginal hike in sales. This looks like a month where the usual top-sellers are dwindling while the back benchers are rising, albeit by a very small number.
The D-segment is going to witness a massive tide when the new Skoda Superb gets launched next month. The current model has been quite popular and the new one might just give some really hard and sleepless nights to the Toyota Camry, who’s sales have fallen last month. The other Toyota, i.e. the Corolla Altis is clearly leading its segment and is tough to beat in sales. The Skoda Octavia is doing pretty good for itself while the Volkswagen Jetta has also sold more units this month. The Hyundai Elantra doesn’t sell well anymore and up to an extent, it was the Creta itself that cannibalised its sales. The Renault Fluence is again a low seller.
