2015 has not been a good year for the motorcycle market as it saw a 3.4 percent year on year fall while the scooter market has performed well with a jump of 12.9 percent.
The Indian two-wheeler market is one of the largest in the world and is dominated by motorcycles since a very long time. However, a revolution seems to be on the door-step with the scooter segment growing steadily as a result of increasing urban traffic. The demand for motorcycles is falling owing to the decreased demand in rural areas due to low wage rate, untimely rain, etc.
The scooter segment saw a year-on-year sales jump of 12.9 percent in 2015 by selling 48,80,117 units while the motorcycle market saw a year-on-year fall of 3.4 percent with sales of 1,05,23,909 units compared to the 1,08,96,687 units sold in 2014. The overall two-wheeler sales were up by 1 percent at 1,61,22,322 units compared to 2014 which is expected to rise by 3-4 percent in 2016 as a result of the rise in scooter segment.
The Hero Splendor again topped the sales chart, however it registered a fall of 1 percent at 24,89,336 units compared to the 25,04,264 units in 2014 while the Honda Activa is still the best-selling scooter with a sale of 24,09,166 units last year compared to the 20,85,835 units in 2014.
Hero still remains on top of the sales chart with sales of 62,96,920 units which is 2.3 percent less than the 64,44,542 units in 2014 while Honda is pacing up to reach the first spot with a sales growth of 3.4 percent by selling 43,14,558 units compared to the 42,72,717 units in 2014.
TVS Motors remain on the third position with sales of 21,48,025 units that is 3.1 percent more than the 20,82,676 units in 2014. At fourth position was Bajaj who acquired a 53 percent market share after the launch of the new Avengers and the Boxer 100cc which was the most exported bike of the year with an export of 7,45,245 units. However, the company saw a fall of 4 percent in total sales by selling 18,09,612 units compared to the 18,85,263 units in 2014.
Yamaha saw a sales growth of 4.9 percent that was majorly due to the launch of the Fascino that made it to the list of top 10 best selling scooters in a very short span of time. The manufacturer clocked a sale of 5,94,608 units. The domestic market is expected to reach 22-23 million units by 2017-2018.
