The Jeep Grand Commander, Compass’ 7-seat version, has been spotted on-road testing in India for the first time. Spotted by MotorBeamer Dhwaj Jain in Lonavala, the development mule is heavily camouflaged from head to tail.
However, its profile is instantly recognisable, thanks to the popularity of the premium 5-seater car, on which it is based, in India.
Upfront, only the grille and air dam of the SUV are visible, while along the sides, the SUV’s larger window area and its longer profile give away the fact that this is the 7-seat SUV based on the Compass.
Also, Jeep’s attempts to completely cover the rear section of the SUV does not help its cause, for it proves rumours that the Grand Commander will come with a completely revised tail section are valid.
Images of a production-ready Grand Commander that was seen in China have already been leaked onto the internet. Going by those pictures, it can be stated that the overall styling of the Jeep Grand Commander spotted on test here will be inspired by the Grand Cherokee L.
It will come with new lights, restyled bumpers, longer rear doors, and of course, there will be new wheel options too, although the test mule seems to be running on alloys borrowed from the Compass.
At present, no interior image of the 6/7-seat SUV is available, but, it is expected to have a more spacious second row, while the third row could be suitable for smaller adults.
The Jeep Grand Commander will likely be offered in India with a 2.0-litre diesel engine expected to produce close to 200 HP. A 6-speed manual and 9-speed auto gearbox options will be on offer, as will 4-wheel-drive.
