The premium luxury sedan segment is heating up with the presence of the Audi A8L, BMW 7-Series which recently got a LCI (Life Cycle Impulse) facelift while Jaguar reduced prices of the XJL by starting local production and now with Mercedes launching the much awaited S350 CDI. Each one of these cars has their own positives and negatives. While some are comfort-oriented, some are performance-oriented while some provide are a blend of comfort, performance and style.
Here we do a price comparison of the diesel variants of all the above mentioned sedans i.e. A8L 3.0-litre TDI and 4.2-litre TDI, BMW 730Ld, Mercedes S350 CDI and Jaguar XJL 3.0 Portfolio.
Talking about Audi, it is the A8L 3.0 TDI that generates more sales while the 4.2-litre is mostly preferred by those who really crave that extra power. The 3.0L TDI unit is no slouch either. It does 0-100 km/hr in 6.2 seconds while the 4.2L TDI does the same sprint in 4.6 seconds. The BMW 730Ld is similar to the A8L 3.0 when it comes to acceleration while the S350 CDI and XJL are a tad slower at 6.8 seconds and 6.4 seconds respectively. Top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/hr on all these sedans.
Coming to power, it is clear that the A8L 4.2 TDI is the most powerful here since it comes with a much bigger engine compared to the other three which are powered by 3.0-litre engines. The A8L 3.0, S350 and XJL produce power in a similar range of 250-270 PS while the A8L 4.2 TDI produces 390 PS of power. The A8L 4.2 also generates a massive torque of 850 Nm while the others produce anywhere between 560-620 Nm.
Jaguar recently started local production of the XJL and hence it is the cheapest of the lot. While the 3.0L Portfolio costs Rs. 1.15 crore, the Premium Luxury can be had for Rs. 1.07 crore (on-road, Mumbai). The A8L is imported as a CBU and hence it costs much more than the others. The BMW 730Ld and the newly-launched S350 CDI are brought down via the CKD route and hence they attract much lesser taxes.
