The Indian Government is all set to introduce new rules and regulations for vehicles in India in the year 2015. These changes will revolutionize the Indian automotive scenario by making vehicles safer with cleaner emissions. These changes will have to be made by all manufacturers in India for all their new cars for them to be deemed fit to be sold in India. But on the flip side, vehicles will become slightly expensive. It is expected cars will become costlier by 1.5 to 2.5 percent and bikes by about 2 percent.
The first change will be to the emission rules, a new Bharat Stage V for cars and SUVs will be introduced which will be equivalent to Euro V. So manufacturers will have to redesign power trains for lower emissions. New regulations for fuel quality will be introduced where a sulfur content of less than 10-ppm will become compulsory. So both private and government oil refineries will have to improve the quality of fuel production. New rules for 2-wheelers will be set, with tighter emission norms plus new design regulations to prevent evaporation of fuel from the junction between fuel tank and engine.
Safety regulations will be made more stringent with higher standards for head-on, offset-front and lateral collisions. New rules for rear-end collisions will be put in place to prevent fuel leakage, injury to passengers and make sure doors open after impact. Higher standards of pedestrian protection too will be introduced to minimize pedestrian injury in an accident. Strap-on seats for kids with child-restraints will become compulsory. New electromagnetic compatibility rules will be introduced to ensure that the array of electronic gadgets like engine management system, ABS, power steering, etc do not cause interference with one other’s functioning.
The Indian Government will make RFID tags compulsory for all new vehicles so that the fuel wastage during payment of tolls and parking fees can be prevented and traffic can move more efficiently without jams. The Government will also introduce a new 4-wheeler category – Quadricycles. These vehicles will provide transport facilities within city limits in certain areas. This will be similar to ‘New Mobility’ vehicles in Japan. These quadricycles will be the step forward from conventional 3-wheelers.
