Renault Duster to make a comeback in a new generation avatar by 2026
Renault India is gearing up to refresh its portfolio with significant updates to its existing models and a major comeback of its popular SUV, the Duster. The company recently announced its plans for facelifts of the Kiger and Triber, which will hit the market later this year. Meanwhile, the all-new Renault Duster is set for an India launch in 2026, marking the return of the iconic model after a four-year hiatus.
Facelifts for Kiger and Triber
The Kiger SUV and Triber MPV, two key models in Renault India’s lineup, are set to receive substantial mid-life updates. The refreshed designs are expected to align with Renault’s global styling cues, moving away from the Kwid-inspired design language of the current Kiger. On the inside, both models will feature updated dashboards, with lighter shades and soft-touch materials for a more premium feel.
While the updates will largely be cosmetic, the Kiger will continue to be offered with its current engine options: the 1.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol and the 1.0-litre turbo petrol units. Similarly, the Triber will retain its 1.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine.
Renault has also hinted at introducing its new global logo, which is yet to debut on any of its Indian models.
Sales and Market Context
Launched in 2019 and 2021, respectively, the Triber and Kiger were designed specifically for the Indian market, offering competitive pricing and features in the sub-four-metre segment. Despite occasional updates and special editions, both models have struggled to maintain strong sales. In 2024, the Kiger averaged under 1000 units per month, while the Triber fared slightly better at around 1500 units.
Apart from domestic sales, Renault exports the Kwid, Triber and Kiger to 14 countries, contributing to its overall market presence.
Duster to Return in 2026
The highly anticipated third-generation Duster will make its way to Indian showrooms in 2026. Production is set to begin by September 2025, with pricing expected to be announced early next year. The new Duster will be part of Renault’s strategy to reinvigorate its SUV portfolio in India, having sold the first-generation model from 2012 to 2022. The second-generation Duster skipped the Indian market.
Renault has also confirmed plans for a three-row SUV, the Bigster, which will follow the Duster’s launch. Both models will have Nissan derivatives, with unique identities and all four SUVs will be manufactured at the Renault-Nissan plant in Chennai. These vehicles will cater to both the domestic and export markets.
A Strategic Move
The updates to the Kiger and Triber, along with the reintroduction of the Duster, signal Renault’s efforts to regain momentum in the competitive Indian automotive market. With its renewed lineup and a focus on exporting vehicles to global markets, Renault aims to strengthen its position and expand its footprint in the coming years.
