Renault-Nissan Confirms Specifically Made Cars For Emerging Markets

Carlos Ghosn, CEO and Chairman of Renault-Nissan, confirms the development of all-new vehicles to meet the specific demands of the fastest growing markets across the globe. The Renault-Nissan alliance has come up with an all-new program developed from scratch, internally named CMF-A (Common Module Family), which will cover the most affordable category of cars. CMF is a modular system of vehicle architecture, which consists of five essential modules – engine bay, cockpit, front underbody, rear underbody and electrical/electronic architecture.

This modular architecture helps the French-Japanese automakers in brand differentiation, as the compatible parts can be assembled into maximum possible configurations. The CMF-A offers a high degree of flexibility, where the manufacturers can differentiate the styling considerably and powertrain variations can also be done for specific demands and preferences in India and as well as other high-growth markets. The production of vehicles falling under the CMF-Architecture will commence in 2015 at the Renault-Nissan Alliance plant in Chennai.

Additional details such as pricing and product volume will be revealed officially, closer to the start of production. The introduction of CMF-A platform by the Renault-Nissan alliance intends to build a strong customer base across emerging markets and is targeted at people buying a new car for the first time. The announcement was made at Renault-Nissan Technology Business Centre, based in Chennai, where development work on CMF-A has begun last year. Expect the vehicles to be very competitively priced.
