The Renault-Nissan Alliance is looking to introduce 5-7 models of different body styles based on the CMF-A modular platform that will help achieve the target of selling 1 million units a year.

The CMF-A platform is 98% localised that has helped price the Kwid so attractively

The Renault-Nissan alliance jointly developed the low-cost CMF-A platform for emerging markets that underpins the newly launched Renault Kwid. Gérard Detourbet, Alliance Managing Director, Alliance A-Segment development unit, also regarded as the father of the Renault Kwid recently expressed his hopes of selling a whopping one million products based on the CMF-A platform every year in the next 10 years.

However, the Renault Kwid won’t be the only model burdened with achieving the aspirational volume. Detourbet confirmed that the Kwid is just the first of the many body styles the CMF-A platform will conceive in the future. In an earlier report, the automaker had stated that it plans to introduce 5-7 models based on the modular platform including a compact sedan, compact SUV and a 7-seater MPV. This is not the first time the French manufacturer has adopted this strategy.

Renault’s Logan, Sandero, Lodgy, Duster and now Duster Oroch, several of which are also sold under the budget Dacia brand share the same underpinnings but have completely different body styles. In addition to Renault, Nissan too will spawn several products on the CMF-A platform under the Datsun brand. After the GO and GO+ models, the automaker is readying up the Datsun I2 based on the Redi-GO concept showcased at the Auto Expo last year which will make it to showrooms by early 2016.

Gérard Detourbet further stated that while the CMF-A has been developed in India, the bigger CMF-B and CMF-CD modular platforms will continue to be developed overseas but will be localised depending on the car which is manufactured here. For the next couple of months, Renault’s concentration will be on making the Kwid a success which has taken the fight to established models like the Maruti Alto and Hyundai Eon with its aggressive pricing. At the other end, Nissan is likely to introduce the new generation X-Trail in India by the year end.
