Renault will first launch the Kwid with an 800cc engine but 6-8 months down the line, the vehicle will also get a more powerful 1.0-litre engine.
Renault is gearing up to launch its newest compact hatchback, the Kwid. The Kwid will be launched in October during the festive season and the company is really betting big on the product. The hatchback combines good styling with high practicality and stands out amongst other bread and butter hatchbacks that we have in our market. The Kwid has serious potential to shake up the segment and Renault will price it at a very aggressive level to give competition some sleepless nights.
Initially, the Renault Kwid will be offered with a 3-cylinder, 800cc engine. Official specifications of the engine haven’t been revealed yet. The engine will be mated to a 5-speed manual transmission or an AMT gearbox which will be available right from launch. The AMT gearbox will be developed in-house by Renault to keep costs in check. To keep the product line-up fresh, the French automaker will keep introducing newer variants every few months. 6-8 months after the launch of the vehicle, Renault will plonk in a 1.0-litre engine in the Kwid as well.
The 800cc Renault Kwid will compete with the Maruti Alto 800 and Hyundai Eon 800 while the 1.0-litre Kwid will compete with the Maruti Alto K10, Hyundai Eon 1.0-litre and Datsun GO. The bigger engine will also get the AMT gearbox. The Kwid is built on the CMF-A platform which will be shared by other Renault, Datsun and Nissan products. The vehicle has high localisation levels of 97% and thanks to this, the company will be able to price it very aggressively at a price point of Rs. 3-4 lakhs (ex-showroom) which is not bad at all.
