Renault Kwid 1.0L Prototypes Exported to Europe For Testing

1.0L prototypes of the Renault Kwid have been exported to Europe for testing, the new variant is expected to be unveiled at the 2016 Auto Expo.

The Renault Kwid has registered 85,000 bookings already

Renault has started working on the 1.0L (1000cc) variant of the very successful Kwid with the prototypes being exported for testing purposes. An export document states that these prototypes are being exported to European countries for Research and Development (R&D) purposes. The new variant of the SUVish hatchback is expected to make its global debut at the 2016 Auto Expo on 3rd February (media day). An AMT variant is also expected to be launched along with it.

The Renault Kwid is a very successful product, it is giving a very tough time to the Hyundai Eon with 85,000 bookings already registered. The 1.0-litre variant will also be offered with ABS and dual front airbags while the existing variant offers driver side airbag as optional on the top-end variant. The new powerplant is expected to be a developed version of the existing 800cc motor. More than half of the mechanical parts are expected to be carried forward from the existing powertrain.

The new variants of the entry-level hatchback will rival the Maruti Alto K10 and K10 AMT. The 1.0L version will be priced very competitively with the help of extensive localisation. The Renault Kwid is claimed to be the reason behind the positive movement in the entry-level segment in December which usually proves to be a disappointing month for automakers as buyers have made their purchases in the festive season itself. The new variants are expected to help the market grow in a similar manner.

Renault was finding it very difficult to sustain in the Indian market after it ended its collaboration with Mahindra. The French manufacturer was entirely depended on the Duster which was also loosing its popularity due to competitors such as the Ford EcoSport and Hyundai Creta. Hence, the Kwid was entitled with the responsibility to take over from the Duster on the sales chart and the small car has been successful in meeting the company’s expectations with the demand being far more than supply.

The Kwid has defeated the Eon for the second place in December sales
