Renault is developing a new compact car and it will be a global model.
Renault is working on a sub 4-metre hatchback and an SUV at the Renault-Nissan Technical Centre in Chennai. The former will be a global model rivalling the Maruti Baleno and Hyundai Elite i20 while the latter will rival the Maruti Vitara Brezza, Tata Nexon, Honda WR-V and Ford EcoSport. The French automaker is planning to invest up to $400 million (approximately Rs. 2547 crores) for the development of these compact cars.
The premium hatchback and SUV will fill the gaps in Renault’s product portfolio and is expected to drive volumes for the company. Both the cars will be riding on a modified version of the CMF-A platform which was developed in India for the Kwid. The recently launched Captur has not been able to meet the expectations while the Duster is averaging sales of approximately 1000 units a month. The premium hatchback will be launched in India in 2019 while the SUV is expected to arrive sometime later. The company is likely to showcase the concept versions of these two cars at the 2018 Auto Expo.
The carmaker is also working on other different cars which are currently in beginning stages. Meanwhile, a sub 4-metre MPV codenamed RBC and a pure EV are also being developed by the company. The former will offer three-row seating and is expected to be launched this year while the EV will arrive by 2022.
