Piaggio will expand the Aprilia line-up in India with new 250-300cc segment motorcycles.
Piaggio is looking to target Royal Enfield in the Indian 2-wheeler market by launching new motorcycles in the 250-300cc segment. The company earlier had plans to launch 150cc bikes in India, but after studying market trends they have decided to launch higher capacity motorcycles.
Piaggio had showcased the Aprilia RS 150 and Tuono 150 at the 2018 Auto Expo and we expected both the motorcycles to be launched in India. However, as the company has now stated, they want to target bigger capacity motorcycles. Piaggio stated that they will launch motorcycles through Aprilia because it is a well-known brand across the globe.
The 250-300cc segment fetched more than 7.7 lakh sales in the Indian market in the last financial year and 99% of this market is currently held by Royal Enfield. Piaggio has stated that they need some time to launch the bikes but it is definitely in the offing.
Also, Piaggio is working on a new India-specific scooter while also refreshing products under the Vespa portfolio. The company is aiming to sell 1 lakh 2-wheelers in FY19.
