It has been a long time coming and finally some concrete information on the launch of the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport has surfaced. Hindustan Motors plans to launch the Pajero Sport at the 2012 Auto Expo in Delhi. The delay of the SUV has been attributed to a rising Yen, which has appreciated around 13% over the last year. To combat the increase in price, HM has adopted to aggresively localise the Pajero Sport by assembling it at its Thiruvallur facility in Tamil Nadu. The same facility also manufacturers the current Pajero.
The Pajero Sport will be powered by a 2.5 liter, 16-valve, turbocharged, intercooled diesel engine which produces 134 bhp of power and 32 kgm of torque. With Mitsubishi’s shift on the fly super select four wheel drive and a ground clearance of 215mm, the Sport is more than capable off-road. With the capacity to seat seven, the Pajero Sport will be a very important model for the survival of Mitsubishi in India. Prices will start at Rs. 20 lakhs, which is (as you guessed it) bang in Fortuner territory.
