Ola S1 production has been suspended until later this year!
Ola Electric’s production woes have been well documented. The electric scooter maker has been working on ironing out issues and 1 tactic it has resorted to is producing all of its units with S1 Pro hardware.
While this first came to light on the final day of 2021, the same has been officially confirmed by the brand’s chief recently. Bhavish Aggarwal has tweeted that all S1 customers will be given a scooter with the S1 Pro’s hardware.
Right from the factory, the S1 will come fitted with the Pro’s 3.97 kWh battery (not its 2.98 kWh pack) and have all the features of the S1 Pro built-in. But, the catch is that these features will be unusable, unless the owner decides to pay Rs. 30,000/- to unlock them.
Do note that the S1 electric scooter costs Rs. 1 lakh, while the top-spec S1 Pro comes in at Rs. 1.30 lakh (prices are ex-showroom and include Fame 2 subsidy and GST).
However, soon after that tweet was posted, Ola S1 customers who are awaiting the opening of the payment window on 21st January, 2022 received a communication (attached above) from the firm which revealed that production of the S1 has been suspended till late 2022.
As can be seen, through this communication, Ola has stated that it will be prioritising the production of the S1 Pro and if a customer still prefers to purchase the base variant, he or she will have to await notification about the S1 reentering production and make the final payment then.
Those who wish to upgrade to the ‘Pro’ can do so when the final payment window opens. Dispatches for the orders will take place through January and February and the company has stated that deliveries will take anywhere between 10 and 20 days after the units get dispatched from the factory.
Naturally, many customers are miffed and are expressing their concerns on social media platforms. However, while such a move from Ola could lead to cancellations, many are expected to pay the additional cost and purchase the S1 Pro rather than wait for their EV for months together.
