Nissan is planning to locally assemble the Teana to reduce costs. The company will get semi knocked-down kits by March. Currently the company imports the Teana from Japan attracting 110% duty due to the car being completely built unit (CBU). Nissan’s Chennai facility has the capacity of 2,00,000 units but the company is only utilising only 70,000 units. With the SKD assembly the price of the Teana is expected to drop by close to Rs. 6 lakhs, making the car a competitive option in the D-segment.
“We have looked up all the option to increase volume. We are studying semi knocked-down (SKD) option for Teana,” said Kiminobu Tokuyama CEO and MD Nissan India. “Import tax on complete built vehicles are very high and makes the car expensive. This has limited the growth of Teana,” added Tokuyama.
