Nissan mocks Honda & Skoda in an online banner advertisement for their mid-size sedan Sunny.
Even with the Micra, Sunny and Terrano in the volumes segment, Nissan isn’t able to make the cut in the Indian car market. Discounting its sub-brand Datsun, the Japanese giant has a market share of 0.37% which is appalling to say the least. Standing at 333 units last month, sales of the Nissan Sunny have indeed gone through a downward spiral over the last couple of years. However, this hasn’t stopped the automaker from taking a dig at two of its rival brands.
The Nissan Sunny is placed in the C-segment and goes against the Honda City, Maruti Ciaz, Hyundai Verna, Skoda Rapid, Fiat Linea and Volkswagen Vento. A string of banner advertisements by Nissan popping up on numerous web pages read, “Not just for the City, but for the Highway too” and “Not just Rapid, but Luxurious too” depicting the Sunny as superior on both the counts. Clearly, these ads are targeted at the Honda City and Skoda Rapid.
Even the massive price cut of up to Rs. 1.9 lakhs that the Sunny received in April 2017 isn’t helping its case. The car, renowned for its rear seat space and comfort, is now priced from Rs. 6.99 to 9.15 lakhs which is lower than the City’s and Rapid’s starting price of Rs. 8.71 lakhs and Rs. 8.31 lakhs respectively (all prices, ex-showroom, Delhi). Still, its sales stand much lower than rivals.
While the Honda City has sort of established its place in the top three, the Skoda Rapid is also doing well post its facelift. In December 2017, the City sold 4365 units and the Rapid managed 1090 units. The Nissan Sunny is powered by 1.5-litre petrol and diesel engines and is due for a replacement with the second-generation model which is speculated to underpin a different platform and in petrol guise only.
