Nissan plans to bring global models of SUVs in India either via CKD or CBU route.
The Japanese manufacturer, Nissan entered the Indian subcontinent in 2005. The first vehicle which was offered by Nissan in India was the SUV X-Trail. In 2008, Nissan established the manufacturing facility at Orgadam near Chennai which got completed in 2010.
Since 2010 several Nissan vehicles were manufactured and assembled locally and few were imported directly from Japan. As of now, Nissan India’s portfolio includes Micra, Micra Active, Sunny and GT-R. The new Kicks will replace the recently discontinued Terrano. Apart from the GT-R, rest all the vehicles are manufactured domestically.
To increase the sales and overall presence, Nissan India is planning to expand its model range by bringing the X-Trail, Pathfinder and the Patrol. These SUVs will be available in India either via the CKD route or as a CBU just like the GT-R. If Nissan chooses the CKD route the assembling of the components will be done at the company’s facility in Tamil Nadu.
These cars will be somewhat exclusive because of their cost. The owner of these SUVs will have to pay a hefty amount of taxes to the Indian government as most of the parts of these vehicles will be imported from Japan.
