The Nissan Evalia MPV, which has a starting price of Rs. 8.70 lakhs is being offered at a discounted rate of Rs. 7.99 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi). Nissan launched the Evalia MPV last year and since then, the carmaker has found very few customers because of its boxy looks, impractical rear sliding doors and poor Euro NCAP safety rating (3 out of 5 stars while cars like the Maruti Swift and Fiat Punto received 5 stars). In the month of June this year, Nissan managed to sell only 36 units of the Evalia, hence the move. The reduced price will help the carmaker to boost sales to some extent.
Nissan is also expected to introduce a facelifted version of the Evalia in the coming festival season. This might be another reason to clear the existing stock with the reduced price tag. In the upcoming facelift, Nissan will address the issues being faced in the ergonomically challenged cabin of the Evalia. The updated version will get sliding rear windows, captain seats with improved cushioning, improved plastic quality, additional features, revised bumpers and lights.
The Nissan Evalia comes with a Renault sourced 1.5-litre K9K diesel engine that produces a maximum power of 85 BHP at 3750 RPM and a peak torque of 200 Nm at 2000 RPM, mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. Nissan claims a mileage of 19.3 km/l with the Evalia. It competes with the likes of the much accomplished Toyota Innova, Mahindra Xylo, Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and Chevrolet Enjoy. Amidst the stiff competition, Nissan has an uphill task ahead to improve the sales of the Evalia.
Interestingly when Nissan put out a tweet mentioning about this special price, many Nissan followers (on Twitter) responded back. Comments like “A price more than EcoSport?”, “Ugliest MPV around!!” and “Evalia is overpriced, its sales figures are proof” quickly followed. Surprisingly Nissan India’s twitter channel gave an ignorant reply to the ugliest MPV tweet, responding “Nissan Evalia is a global MPV available in more than 30 countries, TestDrive to find out the story behind the award winning design.” We wonder which design award did the Evalia get?
