Nissan Pulls Plug On Datsun

Datsun’s stint in India is a good 8 years

Datsun has been discontinued by Nissan owing to its new global transformation strategy

Nissan India has silently discontinued its entry-level Datsun brand in India. This is part of Datsun’s discontinuation spree across markets in the last 2 years amid a major product reshuffle by Nissan.

Though Datsun has been discontinued in India, the products are still listed on its website and customers can buy them from dealerships.

According to Nissan, its new global transformation strategy enables focusing on core models and segments that benefit customers and dealers the most. But the brand assured that all Datsun owners will continue to get after sales service, spare parts, and warranty support from its national dealership network.

Datsun car sales last month stood at 0 units with none of their 3 models – Redi-GO, GO+ and Go finding a buyer. In fact, the Go and Go+ sold 0 units in the previous February month as well. Redi-GO alone sold 239 units in February which is still much less for an A-segment hatchback.

The GO+ was one of the top sellers of Datsun

Nissan relaunched Datsun in India in January 2014 following which it made its entry into Indonesia, Russia, and South Africa. It was developed to meet entry-level buyers across markets but the models could barely sell well. About 470,000 units of the Datsun were produced since its comeback worldwide.

It is to be noted that Nissan discontinued its previous set of cars in 2020 when BS6 norms kicked in. They include the Micra, Sunny, and Terrano (which was the rebranded Renault Duster).
