Is Nissan Readying An Affordable MPV For Indian Market?

Adding a compact MPV to its Indian portfolio will help Nissan big time

The Nissan compact MPV could hit the market late next year or in early 2023

Nissan is said to be developing an affordable compact MPV for the Indian market. It could share the same platform as the Triber from Renault.

Based on a version of the CMF-A platform, the Triber has been fetching a decent number of unit sales for Renault, and Nissan, which is in partnership with the French brand, currently does not have an MPV in its lineup.

Its sister brand Datsun does have the GO+, but that car has failed to set the sales charts on fire even since it was introduced to the market here.

Since both Nissan Magnite and Renault Kiger share the same underpinnings, it is highly plausible the upcoming Nissan compact MPV will be based on the Triber.

However, like in the case of the compact SUVs, the top hat and interior would be rather different between the 2 compact people carriers as well.

Nonetheless, the features offered with both cars should be rather similar, with notable exceptions, of course. Thus, expect to see an 8-inch touchscreen, possibly a digital instrument cluster, smartphone connectivity, among several other goodies.

The Triber’s sales have dropped in the recent past

But, the biggest USP of the car would be its ability to seat up to 7 people, like it is with the Triber. With the last row of seats removed, boot space should be more than enough to accommodate a family’s luggage for a weekend trip.

Unlike the Triber though, the compact MPV from Nissan should come with both the 1.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol motor (72 PS and 96 Nm) and a turbocharged 1.0-litre petrol engine (100 PS and up to 160 Nm).

The Renault MPV only comes with the less powerful motor for now. But, it is expected to gain the turbo-petrol unit soon. The Nissan version of the Triber should come with 3 gearbox options – 5-speed manual, AMT, and CVT – in all.

Since the Triber currently costs between Rs. 5.54 lakhs and Rs. 8.02 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi), its Nissan-badged twin should be priced in the same ballpark when it gets launched in the future.
