Nissan Ariya electric SUV has been revealed in Japan and the headline figures are impressive as the EV gets up to 610 km range.
Look from any angle and the Ariya electric SUV looks striking. The design was first displayed at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show.
Design-wise the Nissan Ariya gets an enclosed grille that Nissan calls a shield, which protects the equipment used for ProPILOT functions and Intelligent Key detection.
The new Nissan brand logo is seen first on the Ariya and is lit, while there are LED headlamps to its sides that are made of four 20 mm mini projectors and they combine with the turn signals.
On the sides, one can see the sleek roofline, 5-spoke 19-inch aluminium wheels (20-inch wheels are also available) and a single line that stretches across the side profile.
The rear is characterised by a steeply raked C-pillar, there is a one-piece light blade representing the rear combination lamps, along with rear fender flares and a high-mounted rear wing.
The interior of the Ariya looks simple and functional. The dashboard is minimalist and has only a few buttons.
Two 12.3-inch displays (one each for instrument binnacle and infotainment system) dominate the dash, while the climate control functions are integrated into the wooden center dash in the form of haptic switches under the infotainment screen.
The centre console is adjustable and there are settings that can be saved as part of the driver’s profile for automatic adjustment.
There is a shifter with haptic drive mode controls, a flat floor leading to Nissan claiming that the electric SUV has the most spacious cabin in its class.
The Ariya gets two battery sizes – 65 kWh and 90 kWh for both 2-wheel drive and all-wheel drive variants.
The 2-wheel drive models get an electric motor that puts out 214 HP and 300 Nm for the 65 kWh battery and 238 HP and 300 Nm with the 90 kWh battery.
Both models can do the 0-100 km/hr time in under 7.6 seconds and have a top speed of 160 km/hr.
It is the 90 kWh Ariya with 2-wheel drive that has 610 km claimed range. The smaller battery has up to 450 km range.
The AWD models with the same battery capacity produce more power and are faster as well (200 km/hr top speed), but have slightly less range.
In all, the SUV weighs between 1900 and 2200 kg depending upon the variant.
Other features offered on the Nissan Ariya electric SUV are ProPILOT 2.0 advanced driver assistance system, remote park, around view monitor, forward collision warning, emergency braking, rear automatic emergency braking, voice command assistance with Amazon Alexa, Wi-Fi connection and over-the-air software update.
The all-new Nissan Ariya is scheduled to go on sale in Japan by mid-2021 and will be priced at around 5 million yen (Rs. 35 lakhs). The SUV will also be sold in Europe, North America and China by the end of 2021.
