Next Generation Maruti Suzuki A-Star Spied Testing

The Maruti A-Star (known as Alto internationally) is due for a makeover. The next generation A-Star has recently been spotted testing in Europe. The new model will be replacing the current A-Star and is said to be based on the latest generation WagonR, which was launched in Japan last year. The next generation A-Star will have increased dimensions and will have a spacious cabin comparatively. Along with new exterior styling, the interiors will also be revamped with additional convenience features.

The upcoming A-Star is expected to have a longer wheelbase for improved legroom and a tall stance for airy interior space and headroom. Interestingly, the new model is expected to be powered by an all-new 2-cylinder, 800cc, turbodiesel engine, which will be manufactured by Maruti Suzuki in India. The new diesel engine is currently under development in India, which will also be used by Maruti to power similar hatchbacks in the Indian lineup.

We can expect Maruti Suzuki to introduce the upcoming hatchback in India at the upcoming 2014 Auto Expo to be held in February. For petrol variants, the next generation A-Star could get the 1.0-litre K-Series petrol engine. The 800cc turbodiesel is likely to be the most fuel efficient engine in the segment. The new car will compete with the likes of Hyundai i10, Honda Brio and Chevrolet Beat. The next generation A-Star might not be called A-Star and is codenamed YL7 internally. It will replace the current A-Star and Estilo in the Indian market. At present, Maruti Suzuki offers Fiat sourced 1.3-litre MultiJet diesel engine on the diesel spec cars in the Indian lineup.
